How can blood-based biomarkers enrich your Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) study population?
In individuals at high risk for Type 1 Diabetes (T1D), the presence of two or more islet auto-antibodies (AAs), such as those to insulin, GAD65, IA-2, and ZnT8, has been shown to be predictive of the rate of disease progression. These islet AAs can be used together with other features to help identify individuals at highest risk for disease development.
In trials intended to prevent or delay the clinical diagnosis of T1D, including these biomarkers in the enrollment process can therefore aid in enriching the study population with subjects likely to progress to stage 3 disease within a reasonable time span. This may allow for smaller and shorter trials, leading to potential cost savings for the study sponsors.
