Type 1 Diabetes mellitus (Type 1 DM) is an autoimmune disease resulting in elevated blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia). It typically begins in children and young adults. First symptoms are increased thirst, frequent urination, tiredness and quick weight loss. Presence of diabetes-related autoantibodies (ICA, IA2, IAA, GAD65 and ZnT8) can be used to study the appearance of type 1 diabetes even before any hyperglycemia arises.
