June 12th, 2019 is the 2nd International NASH (Non-Alcoholic SteatoHepatitis) Day. NASH Day is organized by the NASH Education Program in order to raise awareness and learning about Non-Alcoholic SteatoHepatitis.
About NASH
NASH is the most severe form of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). NASH is a silent, mostly asymptomatic, little-known yet widespread disease. NASH is characterized by the presence of an abnormal accumulation of fat in the liver which in some individuals can progress to liver cell injury (hepatocellular ballooning) and inflammation. Hepatocellular ballooning and inflammation (necroinflammation) are commonly considered as the drivers of disease progression. NASH can progress to result in excessive scarring in the liver (fibrosis), a natural response to injury which can lead to liver cirrhosis or liver cancer.
NASH is related to obesity, pre-diabetes and diabetes and is considered the liver component of metabolic syndrome.
About the NASH Education Program
The NASH Education Program drives educational actions targeted towards patients and physicians, in order to spread awareness about NASH. which too often leads to severe and life threatening complications. The NASH Education Program aims to gather strengths from key healthcare players and NASH stakeholders alike, in order to spread awareness about this disease towards patients, individuals at risk, general population, media, research centers, and many more.
